Herbology is the study of Magical and Mundane plants and fungi. In Herbology, students learn to care for and utilize plants, and learn about their magical properties, and what they are used for. Many plants provide ingredients for Potions and medicine, while others have magical effects of their own right.
These classes are held in the grounds of Hogwarts, in the greenhouses by Pomona Sprout, the Herbology Professor and Head of Hufflepuff house, and later by Neville Longbottom.
Herbology is a mandatory class at Hogwarts up to and including the fifth year. After taking Herbology O.W.L.s, students may either continue to take the class until N.E.W.T.s or drop it.
Students do not do much in Herbology their first year, where they are mostly lectured on plants and their uses, but in their second year they move to Greenhouse three, where there are much more dangerous plants. Students must repot Mandrakes, and prune Abyssinian Shrivelfigs as part of their practical courses in their second year.
Learning to harvest Puffapods is apart of third year students curriculum.
During their fourth year, students learn of the properties of Bubotuber pus and must collect it safely in their practical.
O.W.L.s are taken at the end of the Fifth year, and students revise a lot of what they have learned in the past. They are given more homework then usual, and they work with much more dangerous plants. In the end of the year students must sit a written exam, and a practical where students have to work with a selection of plants, like the Fanged Geranium.
Students who get an O.W.L. will be allowed to continue Herbology if they wish, where they will prepare for their N.E.W.T.s in their seventh year.
